This form provides the information the District Commissioner requires to APPROVE an event to take place (iPOR 9.1b/9.1c). Each Group or Unit attending a Nights Away event (even a run District event) will need to submit this information. For all Nights Away experiences all of the information below should be with Eric Fox (District Nights Away Adviser) 3 WEEKS before the event. For all Nights Away held at facilities not owned or operated by Scouting, such as public or commercial campsites and youth hostels, the host District Commissioner (Note 1) must also receive a copy of the information, normally this should be FOURTEEN days before the event. Where an expedition is taking you across a number of Districts this information can be sent to the local Regional Secretary instead.

TRAINING - Within the Scout Association, every Leader should complete some form of First Aid Training in conjunction with Module 10 of the Leader Training programme (If you have a valid Certificate of First Aid, you do not have to undertake Scout First Response Training just show your Certificate to your Training Advisor). All First Aid Training qualifications last for 3 years, after which time it must be refreshed. BADGES - If the person is under the age of 18, then the appropriate Staged Activity badge on First Aid (1-5) must be worn (Only one at any one time). For Adults (Over 18), if the organisation with whom you passed your first aid qualification has a badge available for that level, then that badge should be worn on the right sleeve of your uniform. If the organisation with whom you passed your qualification does not have an appropriate badge, then the Scout Association Green First Aid Badge should be worn. Participating or passing a Scout First Response Course does not qualify or entitle you to wear any badges on your uniform. This is a pity because our District believe all training should be acknowledged.

Members had been informed the badge should not be worn until January 2012, but due to popular demand the date has been brought forward. The badge can be worn from September 2011 to December 2012. Members should note that as of June 2011 wild camping (e.g camping outside designated campsites) around Loch Lomond is banned. Those who viloate these new rules could face fines of up to £500. Adult appointments in Scotland - Meeting the requirements of PVG
The PVG Scheme legislation places the onus on Scouting to ensure that adults in ‘regulated work’ (see table below) are not barred from working with children - and in a limited number of cases, with vulnerable adults too. I am looking at providing an alternative learning programme for the Scout Communications Badge. This will involve using these radios to learn radio procedures, phonetics. emergency procedures etc. I am happy to assist with this training. If anyone wishes to borrow these please drop me a line. Archery is a potentially dangerous sport due to the speed at which an arrow travels and the silence of the shot. As a consequence, anyone who instructs Archery must do so to the standards of the Community Sports Leadership Award of the Grand National Archery Society (GNAS) Archery must be undertaken according to the standards and controls of GNAS, it is not necessary to hold a GNAS qualification to assist Archery sessions within North Ayrshire and Arran District. Target Archery is the main form of Archery undertaken by Scouts. Other forms of Archery may be undertaken – Field, Clout, Flight, Golf etc however these activities must be practiced using the full rules of GNAS.
A factsheet is available from HQ to help you in running Archery activities here. Those named below have undertaken an passed a GNAS qualification, and as such may also run Scout Archery sessions.

GSLs I appreciate that we are all busy and have personal, professional and Scouting commitments that we all have to deal with however one thing that we need to make sure we get correct is the paperwork. Scouting has moved on, and not for the better in some cases, we as leaders and GSLs need to make sure that we follow the guidelines set down in POR to ensure that we are not leaving ourselves wide open should anything go wrong. Can I encourage you to make sure that your leaders have the necessary paperwork, disclosure and training required for the role that they are undertaking. The District Team are available to assist should you need any help. One thing that I do not want happening is that a leader or GSL is validating the training of someone with in their own group and I am slowly appointing training advisers for each group. The regional training team are going to run training to allow more leaders to becoming training advisers and if you have anyone you think would be a good advisers then please pass me the name. 55th Ayrshire Cubs
The District Team have been working hard on Development and recently attended Dalry Primary School and spoke to all Cub age children with a view to restarting the Cub Pack in Dalry. We now have interest from over 30 Cubs and 10 Beavers. Some of the new Cubs are pictured here at a recent Parent and Cub Day, where one of the tasks was to design a tent using newspaper. The Cub Pack in Dalry will officially be restarting on Thursday 19th November 2009 at 7pm in the Scout Hall in Dalry. Getting Started Training
As part of our Adult Appointments, there is a commitment to undertake adult training. North Ayrshire and Arran District are responsible for facilitating training for Modules 1, 2, 3 or 4 and 12 with the other training Modules being run by the SW Regional Training Team. The District will also host First Response and First Aid Training to satisfy the requirements of Module 10. As part of our Adult Appointments, there is a commitment to undertake adult training. It is a new requirement to undergo module 12 as part of the ‘Getting Started’ training. I would strongly advise that you try to work your way through the on-line training Module 12 beforehand, this is available at: http://www.scouts.org.uk/learnersresources The plan is to hold an Appointments Committee and run through Module 2 during the morning. The Training will be held in the afternoon. Some of you may have already been informed about this training as part of your Appointments Committee arrangements, but I also need you to confirm your attendance by competing the attached form and emailing it back to me. ADVICE NOTE - 999 Emergency Calls From Mobile Phones
Following on from a question raised at the Isle of Arran training day: Calling 999 from a mobile phone From November 2009, it is now possible to use a mobile phone to call the emergency services even if a person’s own network is unavailable in the area. if a rival phone provider has coverage. This is a huge improvement, especially in Scotland. Previously mobile calls to 999 and 112 emergency numbers could only be connected if the caller’s own network was available in the area. Calling 999 from a mobile phone If you dial 999 from a mobile phone you should always be aware that the call may be answered by an operator in another part of the country. This is due to the different locations of base stations used by mobile phone companies. If you have to make an emergency call from a mobile phone, please tell the operator immediately where you are phoning from (in case you get cut-off) this will ensure your call is dealt with by the appropriate local emergency services. 112 is the EU wide adopted emergency number, calling 112 will be answered by the UK emergency services. We are not aware of any plans to phase out the 999 number yet. IN AN EMERGENCY YOU SHOULD ALWAYS CALL 999 Please pass this note on to leaders who do not have access to email.
