Explorer Leaders I have been working with some explorer scouts on their Duke of Edinburgh Awards and looking at the volunteering part of the award (previously the service section). All books must be submitted to SHQ for final approval and what I want to make sure is that the books are completed properly in order that the awards are issued with out delay. If you have a young person doing their volunteering section then they must meet the following conditions and the assessor for this is as follows:- TrainingAll those undertaking their Volunteering Section within Scouting are required to have undertaken either Module A of the Young Leader Scheme or the Getting Started Modules of the Adult Training Scheme. In addition to this at each level of the Award each participant must undertake a further 2 hours of training appropriate to their role. This training could be additional training modules or could be more specific such as first aid training, activity training. The DofE Expedition Assessor training will be run on Saturday 9th October and is compulsory for anyone wishing to become a DofE Expedition Assessor. The Introduction to the DofE Award training will be held on Sunday 10th October is for anyone wishing to get involved in the scheme and who is looking for more information. This course is not compulsory but does give a good base from which to launch the award in your local Unit. Each course lasts all day and tea and coffee will be provided, there will be a small fee of £5.00 per day for lunch. Camping at Fordell Firs is available to anyone wishing to stay for the weekend at a cost of £3.00 per night. Please note that if you do camp this will be on a self catering basis. Morning All We are looking at trying to start up a Network section with in North Ayrshire and Arran. Being a member of Network is a requirement for any young person over the age of 18 who wants to stay in scouting but not hold a warrant. If the young person is over 18 and wants to complete his / her chief scout and queens scout award then they must be a member of Network. Before we can do this we need someone to take on the role of overseeing the Network section. If you are interested or can think of someone who will be good coordinating some roles for Network Scouts then please pass this to me. The quicker we get this up and running the better for our Scouts who are over 18 but don't want to take up a warrant. GSLs I appreciate that we are all busy and have personal, professional and Scouting commitments that we all have to deal with however one thing that we need to make sure we get correct is the paperwork. Scouting has moved on, and not for the better in some cases, we as leaders and GSLs need to make sure that we follow the guidelines set down in POR to ensure that we are not leaving ourselves wide open should anything go wrong. Can I encourage you to make sure that your leaders have the necessary paperwork, disclosure and training required for the role that they are undertaking. The District Team are available to assist should you need any help. One thing that I do not want happening is that a leader or GSL is validating the training of someone with in their own group and I am slowly appointing training advisers for each group. The regional training team are going to run training to allow more leaders to becoming training advisers and if you have anyone you think would be a good advisers then please pass me the name. 55th Ayrshire Cubs
The District Team have been working hard on Development and recently attended Dalry Primary School and spoke to all Cub age children with a view to restarting the Cub Pack in Dalry. We now have interest from over 30 Cubs and 10 Beavers. Some of the new Cubs are pictured here at a recent Parent and Cub Day, where one of the tasks was to design a tent using newspaper. The Cub Pack in Dalry will officially be restarting on Thursday 19th November 2009 at 7pm in the Scout Hall in Dalry. Getting Started Training
As part of our Adult Appointments, there is a commitment to undertake adult training. North Ayrshire and Arran District are responsible for facilitating training for Modules 1, 2, 3 or 4 and 12 with the other training Modules being run by the SW Regional Training Team. The District will also host First Response and First Aid Training to satisfy the requirements of Module 10. As part of our Adult Appointments, there is a commitment to undertake adult training. It is a new requirement to undergo module 12 as part of the ‘Getting Started’ training. I would strongly advise that you try to work your way through the on-line training Module 12 beforehand, this is available at: http://www.scouts.org.uk/learnersresources The plan is to hold an Appointments Committee and run through Module 2 during the morning. The Training will be held in the afternoon. Some of you may have already been informed about this training as part of your Appointments Committee arrangements, but I also need you to confirm your attendance by competing the attached form and emailing it back to me. ADVICE NOTE - 999 Emergency Calls From Mobile Phones
Following on from a question raised at the Isle of Arran training day: Calling 999 from a mobile phone From November 2009, it is now possible to use a mobile phone to call the emergency services even if a person’s own network is unavailable in the area. if a rival phone provider has coverage. This is a huge improvement, especially in Scotland. Previously mobile calls to 999 and 112 emergency numbers could only be connected if the caller’s own network was available in the area. Calling 999 from a mobile phone If you dial 999 from a mobile phone you should always be aware that the call may be answered by an operator in another part of the country. This is due to the different locations of base stations used by mobile phone companies. If you have to make an emergency call from a mobile phone, please tell the operator immediately where you are phoning from (in case you get cut-off) this will ensure your call is dealt with by the appropriate local emergency services. 112 is the EU wide adopted emergency number, calling 112 will be answered by the UK emergency services. We are not aware of any plans to phase out the 999 number yet. IN AN EMERGENCY YOU SHOULD ALWAYS CALL 999 Please pass this note on to leaders who do not have access to email.
