For the attention of all Duke of Edinburgh Advisors, Explorer Scout Leaders, District Explorer Scout Commissioners, District Scout Network Leaders, ARC (Network), ARC (Explorers) ARC (Activities) – please pass on to all other assessors involved with the Duke of Edinburgh scheme.
As many of you are aware the DofE have introduced an Expedition Assessor Accreditation Scheme to clarify roles and responsibilities of assessors and reinforce the 20 conditions of the Expedition section. Many of you have a vast experience in assessing and delivering the DofE. The Accredited Prior Learning route has been devised to fast track experienced volunteers on to the scheme. We realise there is quite a bit of paperwork involved but hope you understand that The Duke of Edinburgh Award want to ensure that there is consistency in assessing whether you are in the Pentland Hills or the Cairngorms. You will still be able to continue assessing groups this coming season, however accreditation will be mandatory from January 2010 at which time DofE will not accept prior learning as a form of accreditation. To this end I would like to get our accreditation up to date as soon as possible and well before the deadline! If you do not currently offer the Duke of Edinburgh Award within your Explorer Unit or Network and would like to get involved please do not hesitate to contact me for further information. This process is for leaders who have experience of running the award and/or assessing DofE Expeditions at any level – the accreditation will reflect this. For individuals with no or very little experience, who would like to attend an assessor accreditation course please contact me at SHQ either by email or by telephone – I am in the process of arranging a course to be run by the DofE staff for Scouts later in the year.
